South Korea records third‑highest July temperature on record

The Korea Meteorological Administration reported that the average temperature for July 2024 was 26.8 °C nationwide, making it the third highest on record after 27.7 °C in 1994 and 27.1 °C in 2023. The month also set a new record for tropical nights, with an average of 9.7 days where the low temperature stayed at or above 25 °C.

A heat‑wave advisory was issued for an average of 8.9 days, with daily maximums reaching 33 °C or higher. The southeastern region experienced the most intense heat, with advisories lasting 22 days in Daegu, 21 days in Gumi and 20 days in Miryang, while Seoul saw only two advisory days. Nationwide rainfall totaled 220.2 mm, just 72.3 % of the long‑term July average, and drought conditions were severe in South Gyeongsang Province, which received only 68 mm (21.9 % of its normal July precipitation).
