South Korea implements major prosecution and investigative reform
South Korea has implemented a major overhaul of its criminal justice system, officially replacing the former prosecution service with the Prosecution Service (Gongso-cheong) as of October 2. Under this new framework, the Prosecution Service is stripped of its direct investigative powers. Instead, its primary responsibilities are limited to initiating and maintaining prosecutions, requesting warrants, and requesting supplementary investigations from the police or the newly established Serious Crime Investigation Agency.
The Serious Crime Investigation Agency is tasked with handling seven major categories of crime, including corruption, economic crimes, and drug-related offenses. To manage the transition, a 90-day grace period has been established, allowing prosecutors to finalize ongoing investigations that were initiated under the previous regulations.
In regional areas like Haenam, the Gwangju District Prosecution Office Haenam Branch has been renamed the Gwangju District Prosecution Service Haenam Branch. While the shift has caused some concerns regarding potential investigative errors or workload increases for the police, local authorities report that the transition has not yet resulted in significant operational confusion or a surge in workload.
