South Korea reports high fatality rate in Adaptive Cruise Control accidents
Data from the Korea Expressway Corporation reveals that accidents involving Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) have a fatality rate of 71.9%, significantly higher than the 10.4% average for general highway accidents. Between 2022 and August, 32 ACC-related accidents resulted in 47 casualties, including 23 deaths.
The primary cause of these accidents is driver inattention, accounting for 81.3% of cases. Other contributing factors include drowsy driving. Authorities emphasize that while ACC assists with distance and speed, drivers must maintain constant forward vigilance.
Concerns are also rising regarding Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. Although classified as a Level 2 driving assistance system, there are currently no records of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport conducting separate safety tests on the approximately 5,898 FSD-equipped vehicles operating in South Korea.
