South Korea announced it will resume construction on a section of the Gyeongwon Line near the Demilitarized Zone, a project that could eventually link Seoul with the eastern North Korean city of Wonsan. Unification Minister Chung Dong‑young said the work, launched in 2015 and halted in 2016, will be restarted despite frozen inter‑Korean relations. President Lee Jae Myung acknowledged the difficulty, stating, “It may feel like shouting into an echo‑less void, but peace and coexistence remain an important task.”

The ministry said the revived railway will improve access to peace and ecological tourism sites in the DMZ and stimulate economic activity in border regions. It also plans to broaden the use of the Inter‑Korean Cooperation Fund, which has seen only 2‑3% of its resources spent annually over the past decade, by revising its enforcement decree. North Korea, meanwhile, has been destroying border road and rail links in 2024 while developing the Wonsan‑Kalma coastal tourist zone, a beach resort with capacity for about 20,000 visitors.
