South Korea samgyeopsal ingredient costs rise 11.8%
The cost of preparing samgyeopsal (pork belly) at home in South Korea has risen significantly, with ingredient costs increasing by 11.8% in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year. According to a report by the Korea Consumer Agency, the average cost for one serving (200g of pork plus side ingredients like kimchi, garlic, lettuce, and ssamjang) reached 10,191 KRW.
Individual ingredient price hikes contributed to this trend. Ssamjang saw the highest increase at 19.8%, followed by pork belly at 13.6% and garlic at 10.2%. For a family of four, the basic ingredient cost for a single samgyeopsal meal now exceeds 40,000 KRW.
While dining out for samgyeopsal also saw a price increase, it was much more modest at 2.7%, bringing the average restaurant price to 17,745 KRW per serving. Consequently, the price gap between eating at home and dining out has narrowed, shrinking from 8,173 KRW last year to 7,554 KRW this year.
