South Korea says Coupang fine won’t stall US trade and security talks

South Korean National Security Adviser Wi Sung‑lac said a dispute over a data leak at U.S.–listed e‑commerce firm Coupang is not delaying bilateral discussions on trade, investment or security with Washington. The data breach affected more than 33 million records, and South Korea imposed a fine of 625 billion won (about $422 million) on Coupang.

Wi noted that recent talks covered a broad range of issues, including South Korea’s $350 billion investment pledge to the United States, and that there are no signs security consultations are being postponed. US officials have warned against disproportionate burdens on American companies, but Seoul maintains the penalty is applied uniformly and does not impede the overall agenda.
