South Korea scrambles fighter jets as Russian aircraft enter ADIZ
South Korea's military scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday after multiple Russian military aircraft entered the country's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. The South Korean Ministry of Defense reported that the aircraft were detected before entering the zone and were monitored as they entered and subsequently exited the area near the islets of Dokdo and Ulleung Island.
Authorities emphasized that the Russian aircraft did not violate South Korean sovereign airspace. The ADIZ serves as a buffer zone where foreign aircraft are expected to identify themselves for security purposes, though there is no strict legal obligation to do so under international law.
This incident marks the second such incursion in recent weeks. A similar event occurred in late June when more than ten Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered the KADIZ. During that instance, Beijing described the movement as a 'strategic air patrol,' while Moscow characterized it as part of routine military cooperation. South Korea has previously lodged protests regarding these incidents, requesting that such occurrences be prevented in the future.
