South Korea seeks early return of wartime military command from US

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for the early return of wartime operational control (OPCON) from the United States, arguing that regaining military command is essential to national sovereignty. Marking his 500th day in office, Lee stated that South Korea is sufficiently capable of assuming this responsibility and noted that discussions with Washington are progressing.

The push for command transfer comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Following a September 21 land mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone that injured three South Korean soldiers, North Korea has accused Seoul of military provocations. Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, described the border situation as 'very unstable.'

While the U.S. has expressed intent to transfer OPCON once agreed conditions are met, US Forces Korea Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson recently indicated that the security environment has changed, necessitating new standards for the transition. Currently, approximately 39,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea under a bilateral defense agreement established after the Korean War.
