South Korea grapples with heavy rain and heat wave June 6‑8

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecast widespread rain and high humidity across the country on June 6, with continued downpours through June 8. Precipitation amounts were projected at 20‑60 mm in most regions, up to 100 mm in parts of the central and northern areas, and over 150 mm in some western coastal zones. Strong thunderstorms, gusty winds and occasional lightning were expected, especially in the Seoul metropolitan area, the central interior, and the northern inland of Gangwon Province.

Temperatures were set to exceed 30 °C in many inland locations, with heat indices reaching 31‑33 °C and local heat warnings issued for several provinces. Cities such as Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Jeju were forecast to see maximum temperatures of 32‑35 °C. Officials warned of possible flash flooding, river swelling, landslides and other water‑related hazards, urging caution for commuters and residents in low‑lying areas.

The combined heat and rain pattern, driven by a stationary front and pressure troughs moving eastward from the Shandong Peninsula, is expected to keep humidity high and limit relief until the end of the week.
