South Korea weather shifts from record heat to heavy eastern rainfall

South Korea is experiencing a transition in extreme weather as record-breaking heatwaves begin to ease, replaced by heavy rainfall along the eastern coast and Jeju Island.

Following several days of extreme heat, where temperatures in parts of Seoul reached as high as 40.2°C, the Korea Meteorological Administration reported that heatwave warnings have been lifted across most regions. While daytime temperatures are expected to moderate to between 26°C and 37°C, high humidity levels are expected to maintain stifling conditions in many areas.

Simultaneously, the east coast is facing significant precipitation. A combination of moisture from the East Sea and northeasterly winds—influenced by the movement of Typhoon Dolphin—has created heavy rain clouds against the Taebaek Mountains. Gangwon Province and parts of North Gyeongsang Province are bracing for heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving over 150mm. Heavy rain warnings are currently in effect for Gangneung and Donghae.
