South Korea sees relief from extreme heat as overnight temperatures drop

South Korea is experiencing a reprieve from extreme heat as overnight temperatures begin to drop. Major cities have broken long streaks of tropical nights, where temperatures remained at or above 25 degrees Celsius from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. Busan ended a 23-day streak of tropical nights, while Seoul concluded a 17-day period of such conditions.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts morning lows to fall to around or below 20 degrees Celsius in several regions, including Chuncheon, Daejeon, and Daegu. While nighttime relief is evident, daytime highs are expected to remain significant, with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius in Seoul, Incheon, Jeonju, and Gwangju.

High-level extreme heat warnings have been lifted, though lower-level advisories persist in the Seoul metropolitan area and southern regions. Additionally, the weather may be influenced by Typhoon Chan-hom. While the typhoon's strong-wind radius is not projected to directly hit the Korean Peninsula, moisture from the storm could affect rainfall along the east coast.
