South Korean former pilot sentenced to life for murder and attempted murder
A former pilot, Kim Dong-hwan, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Busan District Court for the murder of a former colleague and the attempted murder of another. The court also ordered him to wear an electronic ankle monitor for 30 years.
In March, Kim entered an apartment in Busan disguised as a delivery worker and killed a pilot with a knife. The day before this incident, he attempted to strangle another pilot in a satellite city near Seoul. Investigations revealed that Kim had spent seven months planning the crimes, which included stalking victims, monitoring their living patterns, and using unauthorized access to airline flight schedules to track their movements.
Kim, who attended the same air force academy as his victims, claimed his motive was retaliation for systematic defamation by his former colleagues. During his sentencing, he showed no remorse, stating he had no regrets and even issued new death threats, claiming he had already hired contract killers for five remaining colleagues. The court cited his high risk of recidivism and lack of remorse as reasons for the life sentence, noting the need for permanent social isolation.
