South Korea special prosecutor to probe National Election Commission

The launch of a special prosecutor to investigate the National Election Commission (NEC) is imminent following the June 3 local elections. Two candidates, former prosecutor Lee Tae-han and former prosecutor Lee Hyuk, have been recommended for appointment. If a selection is not made by the deadline, the elder candidate will be appointed.

The investigation will focus on 11 to 12 key areas, including the shortage of ballot papers, allegations of election statistics manipulation, and potential cover-ups regarding the ballot shortage. Additionally, the probe will examine corruption within the NEC, such as unauthorized overseas trips by officials, preferential hiring, and irregularities in contract awards.

The special prosecutor team is expected to consist of up to 166 members and may operate for a maximum of 170 days. While joint investigative teams have already conducted raids and preliminary inquiries, the special prosecutor is expected to focus on the involvement and accountability of high-ranking leadership. There is also ongoing political debate regarding a planned ballot recount at Olympic Park, which may be delayed due to disagreements over whether the special prosecutor must be present.
