South Korea speeds up semiconductor cluster projects in Yongin and Saemangeum

South Korean authorities and leading chipmakers are accelerating the rollout of major semiconductor clusters. SK Hynix confirmed its first production line in Yongin will start clean‑room operations in February 2027, while Samsung aims to have its advanced system‑semiconductor fab operational by 2029. The government has also moved the power‑supply schedule for the Yongin site forward by 11 years, targeting full electricity provision by 2042.

In the western Saemangeum region, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held consecutive meetings with Hyundai Motor Group and Samsung to fast‑track a robot‑foundry and a broader Ho‑nam semiconductor cluster. Hyundai pledged a 9 trillion‑won investment to build an AI‑based robot fab, and officials discussed relocating the Gwangju‑Gunsan airport and creating a 30‑minute commuter link between industrial and residential zones. Simultaneously, a new housing development called “Yongin Gomrim Dongmun East” is being marketed as a 30‑minute commute hub for workers at both clusters, offering early‑buyer incentives and extensive local amenities.
