South Korea stock market faces extreme volatility despite strong growth

South Korea’s stock market has experienced some of the strongest growth globally this year, yet extreme volatility is emerging as a significant national concern. Market fluctuations have exceeded 60 percent this year, reaching nearly 100 percent during the summer, levels described as unusually high for a major economy outside of a financial crisis.

This instability is driven in part by a high proportion of retail investors and the ongoing AI boom, which has placed semiconductor companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix at the center of market movements. While the market benefits from strong global sectors including defense, beauty, and entertainment, South Korean stocks continue to trade at a discount compared to international markets.

This ‘Korea discount’ is often attributed to the cyclical nature of key industries and the corporate governance structures of large, family-controlled conglomerates known as chaebols. Recent reforms have aimed to strengthen minority shareholder rights and limit family influence to address these issues.
