South Korea strengthens AI security following Government24 data breach
South Korea's Government24 portal suffered its first hacking incident in August, resulting in the theft of memory dump files containing potential personal information such as resident registration numbers, phone numbers, and login credentials. While the exact scale of the breach remains unconfirmed, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety has addressed the vulnerabilities and is transitioning to an AI-driven security monitoring system. This new approach uses AI to automatically detect and block suspicious activities before human operators verify the incidents, aiming to increase response speeds.
In parallel, the government is advancing its broader AI and data administration strategy. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety is launching a pan-governmental cooperation system to coordinate AI policies across various agencies, including the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and local governments like Seoul and Incheon. This initiative includes developing AI impact assessment guidelines and establishing a public AI and data association.
Additionally, the National Intelligence Service (NIA) has initiated a project to re-verify the de-identification of 150 types of data hosted on the AI Hub. This effort aims to ensure that no sensitive personal information, such as faces or license plates in images and videos, remains in datasets provided for AI training and research.
