South Korea strengthens drug response amid Jeju ketamine discoveries

Authorities in South Korea are addressing rising drug concerns through both maritime discoveries and systemic government reforms. In Jeju, a package disguised as a tea bag containing suspected ketamine was discovered at Gwangchigi Beach. This marks the 23rd such instance of drug-related items being found along the Jeju coast since September last year, with a cumulative total of approximately 40kg of suspected narcotics recovered.

Investigators believe these items may have drifted from waters near Taiwan due to ocean currents, noting similar discoveries near Japan and Pohang. The Jeju Coast Guard has requested a detailed forensic analysis from the National Forensic Service.

Simultaneously, the South Korean government is strengthening its inter-agency response to prevent investigative gaps following upcoming judicial reforms. A multi-ministry meeting led by the Office for Government Policy Coordination outlined plans to establish dedicated drug investigation units within the new Serious Crime Investigation Agency. The strategy includes enhanced cooperation between customs, police, and maritime authorities, alongside expanded infrastructure for drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation through 2027.
