South Korea strengthens industrial risk assessment and safety management

South Korea is strengthening its risk assessment system to prevent industrial accidents by shifting focus from administrative documentation to actual field-based prevention. Under the updated regulations, workers' rights to raise safety concerns and exercise the right to stop work are being formalized. Starting January 1, 2027, employers who fail to implement risk assessments will face phased fines of up to 10 million won.

To ensure effectiveness, experts emphasize that risk assessment must involve workers who understand the site best. The system aims to move beyond mere paperwork to ensure that identified hazards lead to actual improvements in work methods. Challenges remain for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) regarding budget and manpower, necessitating government support through digital tools and consulting.

In line with these safety trends, the Mungyeong Tourism Organization recently held a ceremony to declare a joint labor-management safety and health management policy. The organization committed to field-centered safety management, involving workers in identifying hazards and improving facilities to ensure the safety of both employees and visitors.
