South Korea stroke patients exceed 650,000

The number of stroke patients in South Korea has surpassed 650,000, marking a steady increase. According to data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, cases rose from approximately 620,000 in 2021 to over 658,000 in 2025. The increase was more pronounced among men (9.6%) than women (1.9%), with patients aged 80 and older showing the highest growth rates.

Medical experts emphasize the importance of proactive management, particularly for the high-risk group consisting of individuals with a family history of stroke, which accounts for nearly 10% of those screened. Because strokes often occur without clear warning signs, early detection through regular checkups is critical.

Carotid artery disease is identified as a major asymptomatic risk factor. As the primary vessel supplying blood to the brain, narrowing of the carotid artery due to plaque buildup can lead to cerebral infarction. The number of patients treated for carotid artery stenosis or occlusion rose by nearly 40% between 2021 and 2025.
