South Korea targets integrated K-Agri Tech exports

An analysis by the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) suggests that South Korea should expand its export strategy from food products to a comprehensive 'K-Agri Tech' package, integrating seeds, agricultural machinery, and smart farming technologies.

Smart farming emerged as the sector with the highest global market competitiveness among eight key industries, including pesticides, fertilizers, and pet food. However, researchers noted that despite high technological capabilities, the industry faces challenges such as insufficient export infrastructure, high logistics costs, and a lack of after-sales service systems. To succeed, the report suggests tailored strategies: water-saving technologies for the Middle East, ESG and energy-focused tech for Europe, and ODA-linked models for Africa.

The seed industry also shows high potential but suffers from a structural weakness where approximately 90% of Korean seeds are produced overseas and then re-imported, leading to high costs. Additionally, while the pet food sector is growing due to the 'pet humanization' trend, it remains heavily dependent on imported raw materials. Experts recommend building an integrated export ecosystem that connects the entire value chain, from seed and fertilizer production to smart farming equipment and processed food products.
