South Korea targets SMR technology for future nuclear export strategy
Public opinion and industry experts are emphasizing a strategic shift toward Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to secure South Korea's position in the future nuclear export market. According to a survey by the K-Policy Finance Institute, 33.7% of respondents believe the export strategy should transition to SMRs centered on securing technological independence.
Key findings from the survey indicate that 66.8% of participants support policy financing to encourage foreign nuclear companies to invest in and manufacture components within South Korea. To maximize benefits from international cooperation, respondents prioritized securing intellectual property rights and access to core technologies.
At a recent conference on building a next-generation SMR ecosystem, Lee Young-jun, acting director of the Nuclear Promotion Strategy Division at the Korea Institute of Nuclear Research, noted that while South Korea is developing six types of SMRs, the current profit models and business implementation systems remain insufficient. He highlighted the need for mass production process innovation, verification infrastructure, and stable fuel supplies to compete globally.
