South Korea tenders 1.18 GW of energy storage capacity
The Korea Power Exchange (KPX) has initiated a competitive bidding process for its 2026 energy storage system (ESS) central contract market. The tender aims to secure 1.18 GW of six-hour storage capacity, with 1.1 GW designated for the South Korean mainland and 80 MW for Jeju Island. Projects are expected to be completed by February 2029.
Bids will be evaluated using a balanced scoring system: 50% based on price and 50% on non-price factors. Key non-price criteria include fire safety, grid-forming capability, supply-chain resilience, and local economic contributions. While not mandating domestic supply, the KPX requires bidders to disclose the origin of all components, including cells, modules, and cathode materials.
The tender allows for both lithium-ion and non-lithium technologies, provided a single project does not mix different storage types. Other evaluation factors include maintenance capabilities, battery recycling plans, and the power-sector experience of major shareholders.
