South Korea threatens Ukraine over North Korean prisoner transfer dispute

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has threatened unspecified measures against Ukraine following a diplomatic dispute over the disclosure of North Korean prisoners of war. The tension arose after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced at the UN General Assembly that Ukraine had transferred two North Korean soldiers, captured while fighting for Russia, to South Korea.

Seoul maintains that a confidentiality agreement was in place to protect the soldiers and their families from North Korean retaliation, a pact they claim Kyiv breached by making a unilateral public announcement. Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andriy Sybha, have denied the existence of such an agreement, characterizing the situation as a “diplomatic misunderstanding.”

President Lee expressed grave regret, stating that the denial of the agreement makes him appear like “a liar” and affects the national dignity of South Korea. He further accused Kyiv of attempting to provoke conflict on the Korean Peninsula by discussing imminent military clashes between the two Koreas. The South Korean government has summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to demand an official apology and acknowledgment of the prior agreement.
