South Korea threatens Ukraine over North Korean POW transfer dispute FAST-MOVING

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has threatened unspecified ‘additional measures’ against Ukraine following a diplomatic dispute over the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war. The conflict erupted after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly disclosed at the UN General Assembly that Ukraine had transferred the two soldiers, who were captured in Russia’s Kursk region in January 2025, to South Korea.

Seoul maintains that a bilateral confidentiality agreement was in place to protect the prisoners and their families from potential retaliation by North Korea. President Lee accused Kyiv of breaching this agreement and making him appear to be a ‘liar.’ He also expressed grave regret over Ukrainian remarks regarding potential military conflict on the Korean Peninsula, characterizing them as provocative.

Ukraine has denied the existence of any such confidentiality agreement. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the situation as a ‘diplomatic misunderstanding’ and emphasized that South Korea remains a vital partner. Both nations' foreign ministers are reportedly engaged in discussions to resolve the tension, including potential apologies from Kyiv to restore diplomatic trust.
