South Korea to construct five new dams for flood and water supply

South Korea's Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has finalized plans to construct five new dams to address flood control and industrial water demand. This decision follows a comprehensive review of 14 previously proposed dam sites. Of the original 14, seven projects have been halted due to low necessity or local opposition, while two will pursue alternative methods instead of new construction.

The five approved construction projects include Jicheon Dam (Cheongyang/Buyeo), Amicheon Dam (Yeoncheon), Byeongyeongcheon Dam (Gangjin), Hoeyagang Dam (Ulsan), and Go hyeoncheon Dam (Geoje). Jicheon and Amicheon dams are designated as multi-purpose dams to provide both flood protection and water supply for regional projects and industrial needs. Specifically, Jicheon Dam is expected to supply 180,000 tons of water daily to the Geum River basin.

Other projects focus on enhancing existing infrastructure. Byeongyeongcheon and Hoeyagang dams will incorporate flood control functions into existing drinking water facilities, while Go hyeoncheon Dam will be raised and fitted with sluice gates. The total estimated project cost has been revised down to approximately 1.67 trillion won from an initial estimate of 4.75 trillion won. The ministry will proceed with feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments to finalize the plans.
