South Korea to discount EV charging on weekends and holidays

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has announced a discount on public electric vehicle (EV) charging fees during daytime hours on weekends and public holidays from September 5 to October 31. The initiative aims to encourage electricity usage during periods of high renewable energy supply, such as solar power, to ensure stable power grid operations while providing cost savings to citizens.

The discount applies to both self-consumption charging stations (located at homes or companies) and charging service provider rates. For self-consumption stations, the electricity rate will be discounted by 50%, ranging from 40.1 to 48.6 won per kWh.

Public rapid chargers operated by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment will offer even larger reductions. By combining the 50% electricity rate discount with additional internal subsidies, total charging fees for these rapid chargers could be reduced by up to 32%. This is a significant increase compared to the maximum 15% discount offered during the spring period.

Many private charging companies are also expected to reflect these discounts through various methods, such as direct price reductions or reward points. The government plans to analyze the results of this autumn program to design a seasonal and time-of-use charging rate system for implementation next year.
