South Korea to implement world-first green shipping corridor law

South Korea is preparing to implement a world-first special law to establish green shipping corridors, aimed at decarbonizing the entire maritime logistics process. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is currently drafting subordinate statutes to define standards for eco-friendly vessels and ports, as well as procedures for designating and operating these corridors. The law is scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2025.

In coordination with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the government is also pursuing the ‘2nd Basic Plan for the Development and Distribution of Eco-friendly Ships (2026–2035)’. This initiative focuses on five key strategies: R&D for carbon-reducing future vessels, commercialization of new technologies, expansion of eco-friendly fuel infrastructure, distribution of green ships, and the creation of a green shipping and shipbuilding ecosystem.

The government aims to support the transition of 889 private and public vessels to eco-friendly models by 2035. Efforts will specifically include increased support for small and medium-sized shipbuilding and equipment companies to enhance their competitiveness in green technology and design.
