South Korea to increase international flights to Japan and China this winter

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has finalized the winter flight schedule, effective from October 25 to March 27, 2027. Total international regular flights will increase to a maximum of 5,353 per week, surpassing pre-pandemic levels from 2019.

The expansion focuses heavily on Japan and China, with weekly flights increasing by 314 and 232 respectively. Notably, six new direct routes to China will be established, including new connections from regional airports such as Busan to Guangzhou, Busan to Xiamen, Cheongju to Xiamen, and Jeju to Shijiazhuang. This expansion aims to reduce the burden on regional residents who previously had to travel to Incheon to access international routes.

To support this growth, slot capacities at Gimhae and Cheongju airports will also be expanded, particularly during weekends. The Ministry also noted it will monitor route operations and support licensing procedures in anticipation of the scheduled merger between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines on December 17.
