South Korea to launch 3 trillion won construction fund and carbon market
The South Korean government has announced a series of measures to bolster economic stability and support overseas expansion. During the External Economic Ministers' Meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hyung-il revealed plans to establish a 3 trillion won ‘Overseas Construction New Strategic Fund’. This fund will use 1 trillion won in government seed money to attract domestic and international capital, shifting from individual project support to a joint investment platform based on specific countries or regions.
In addition to construction support, the government is advancing its climate strategy through the ‘Global Verified Carbon Market’ (GVCM), set for full operation next year. The initiative aims to increase trust in carbon markets by recording greenhouse gas reduction data on a blockchain. The government is also exploring the issuance of carbon credits as digital assets to facilitate 24-hour trading and broader participation.
To mitigate global uncertainties, the government is monitoring risks in trade, supply chains, and finance. This includes diversifying trade networks to counter protectionism and increasing domestic production of high-risk economic security items. The government also noted that South Korea maintained a current account surplus of $46.11 billion in August, marking 40 consecutive months of surplus.
