South Korea to provide 166 types of medical equipment to North Korean hospital
The South Korean government is preparing to provide 166 types of essential medical equipment to Gangdong County Hospital in North Korea. This initiative is part of the ‘Health and Medical Cooperation Bundle,’ a project under the Ministry of Unification’s four major peace exchange projects aimed at modernizing North Korean regional healthcare.
The equipment, which includes tools for diagnosis, surgery, and treatment, is intended for the hospital completed last November as part of Kim Jong Un’s ‘Regional Development 20×10 Policy.’ To facilitate this, the South Korean government has already secured a sanctions exemption from the UN Security Council for humanitarian medical aid and has allocated funds from the inter-Korean cooperation fund.
However, the plan has faced criticism from opposition lawmakers. Representative Kim Dae-sik argued that providing aid while North Korea continues ballistic missile provocations and maintains a hostile stance toward the South is inappropriate, describing the approach as ‘subservient.’
