South Korean President Lee Jae‑myung to Chair National Real‑Estate Policy Forum on May 23

President Lee Jae‑myung will preside over a nationwide real‑estate discussion on 23 May, inviting the public, experts and industry groups to debate housing supply, mortgage regulation and property‑tax reforms. The event follows three ministerial hearings – the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Economy and Finance – scheduled for 14‑16 May, each focusing on supply, finance and tax issues respectively. Organisers will collect opinions online and through open‑forum channels, emphasizing that the government will consider this feedback when finalising policy.

Opposition lawmaker Song Yon‑seok criticised the administration’s mortgage‑limit policy, arguing that a 600 million‑won loan cap is inadequate for the average 1.5‑billion‑won Seoul apartment and called for an apology over perceived policy failure. Policy chief Kim Yong‑beom said the government aims to finalize the tax‑reform package by late July or early August, targeting adjustments to the holding‑tax and transaction‑tax structures, especially for high‑value homes. He also noted that the authorities are reviewing the impact of newly introduced leveraged ETFs on the market and are monitoring the relocation discussions for the U.S. military base at Gwangju’s former airfield.
