South Korea to reform financial education for military personnel

South Korean authorities are overhaulng financial education for military personnel to transition from traditional lecture-based formats to interactive, personalized learning. The initiative, developed by the Financial Services Commission, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Financial Supervisory Service, aims to help soldiers manage increasing salaries and savings while mitigating risks from online gambling, high-interest loans, and high-risk investments.

Key measures include the expansion of one-on-one customized financial counseling covering income management, savings plans, and debt management. The government plans to introduce short-form and entertainment-style educational content, and by 2027, utilize financial professionals such as analysts and private bankers as instructors.

Additionally, officials are reviewing ways to use the successful maturity of the ‘Soldier Tomorrow Preparation Savings’ to build positive credit histories for young service members. To ensure the program remains educational, guidelines will be implemented to prevent financial institutions from using these sessions as sales channels for their own products.
