South Korea is set to relaunch its investigation into assets acquired by pro-Japanese collaborators during the Japanese colonial period. Following the passage of a special law, the Pro-Japanese Property Investigation Committee is scheduled to be reconstituted and begin operations on December 3. This marks the return of a dedicated investigative body after a 16-year hiatus following the dissolution of the first committee in 2010.

The new legislation significantly expands the government's authority. Unlike the previous committee, the new law allows for the seizure of proceeds from assets that have already been sold or transferred by descendants of collaborators. Additionally, a reward system has been established to incentivize citizens to report discovered pro-Japanese properties.

Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho has expressed optimism regarding the new mandate, projecting that the second committee could recover at least 32.5 billion won in assets. The recovered funds are designated to support the welfare of independence activists and their descendants. The first committee, which operated from 2006 to 2010, successfully recovered approximately 237.3 billion won.
