South Korea to release 500 endangered red-clawed crabs into Bongam Tidal Flat

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that 500 adult red-clawed crabs, successfully bred through indoor artificial propagation, will be released into the Bongam Tidal Flat in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, on October 13.

The red-clawed crab is a protected species classified as a Class II endangered wildlife species. Its population has declined significantly due to coastal development and habitat destruction. The crabs are characterized by their distinctive red claws and typically inhabit estuaries and coastal wetlands.

The breeding project was a collaborative effort between the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea and Kunsan National University. The release aims to expand wild populations and restore biodiversity within the Bongam Tidal Flat, which has been a designated wetland protection area since 2011. Officials noted that successful restoration requires both the propagation of individuals and the continued protection of their natural habitats.
