South Korea to reveal electricity demand forecasts for mega projects

The South Korean government is set to release provisional figures for new electricity demand on the 20th, reflecting the anticipated impact of the ‘3 mega projects’. These projects are expected to generate new power demand equivalent to the output of 18 large-scale nuclear power plants.

The announcement will be part of the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand. While the provisional figures will only include demand from projects with concrete business plans rather than the full scope of the mega projects, the data will provide a revised outlook for power needs through 2040.

Public policy debates scheduled for the 20th will address the transition to an electric-based nation and renewable energy expansion. Following these discussions, the government plans to hold further sessions in September and October to address contentious issues, including new nuclear power roadmaps, the phase-out of coal power, and electricity market reforms.
