South Korea to strengthen national administrative disaster recovery systems
The South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety is strengthening the disaster recovery (DR) framework for national administrative information systems following a battery fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) Daejeon Center last year.
Minister Yoon Ho-jung recently inspected the Daejeon Center to review recovery progress and digital safety management. To ensure service continuity, the government has reclassified approximately 15,000 national information systems into four grades (A1 to A4) based on their impact on citizens. The highest grade, A1, requires a recovery target of within one hour through dual-operation methods using secondary systems in different data centers.
The ministry plans to establish DR systems for 97 major information systems by 2028. High-priority systems, including 'Safe Stepping Stone' and 'dBrain', will begin construction in October with completion expected in the first half of next year.
Additionally, the government aims to close the Daejeon Center by 2030 due to fire risks and aging infrastructure. Plans are being developed in collaboration with private cloud providers such as KT, Naver, and NHN Cloud to relocate systems. This includes migrating 50 systems to private clouds this year, with further expansion planned for next year.
