South Korea updates Ebola response and quarantine guidelines

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has updated its response guidelines for viral hemorrhagic fevers, such as Ebola virus disease, to prepare for potential domestic cases.

Under the revised protocols, any confirmed Ebola patients in South Korea will be immediately transferred to the National Medical Center for treatment. The new guidelines establish a more systematic process for managing symptomatic travelers, clarifying the specific roles of quarantine stations and public health centers.

The update also includes enhanced safety standards for blood testing, specifying the use of negative pressure isolation wards or high-level biosafety facilities. Additionally, the guidelines provide detailed safety procedures to prevent needle-stick injuries among medical staff and establish management protocols for pregnant women and newborns.

This measure comes amid ongoing Ebola outbreaks in regions such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the World Health Organization reports a high fatality rate. While there have been no confirmed cases of Ebola entering South Korea, the KDCA is strengthening its preparedness to manage potential influxes.
