South Korea updates medical welfare and physician residency rules

South Korean authorities are implementing measures to strengthen medical welfare and resolve eligibility issues for regional medical programs.

In Byeongjeom-gu, local officials have partnered with Dongtan City Hospital to establish a medical and welfare safety net for vulnerable populations. The agreement focuses on connecting administrative welfare support with professional medical services, including health consultations, medical expense support, and preventative education. As part of the initiative, the hospital provided approximately 5 million won worth of food and supplies to support local welfare projects.

Separately, the Ministry of Health and Welfare is revising residency requirements for the regional physician selection process to address discrepancies in the Chungbuk Innovation City school district. Currently, students residing in Jincheon but assigned to high schools in Eumseong may fail to meet residency criteria because the two areas belong to different medical service zones. The proposed amendment will allow students to meet residency requirements if they live within a single school district, even if that district spans multiple medical zones. This change aims to prevent students from losing eligibility due to school assignments beyond their control, with implementation targeted for the 2027 academic year.
