South Korea vote‑paper shortage triggers probe and calls for voting reform

A joint investigation team (합수본) has summoned two staff members from the Songpa‑district election office in Seoul, along with several local officials, to question them about the shortage of ballot papers that occurred at polling stations during the June 3 local elections. The team is examining how the shortage was reported and addressed, with the investigation expected to expand to senior election officials.

In the wake of the incident, People Power Party lawmaker Choi Hyung‑du urged a comprehensive overhaul of the voting system. He argued that early‑voting procedures contributed to logistical problems and advocated eliminating or reducing early voting, expanding in‑person voting days, and introducing advanced absentee‑ballot methods modeled on the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Choi also called for digital ID, stronger security measures and greater transparency in ballot handling.

Both developments reflect mounting public and political pressure to restore confidence in South Korea’s election administration.
