South Korea warns of resolute punishment amid rising border tensions
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated following a series of accusations and threats between Seoul and Pyongyang. South Korea has labeled North Korea’s claims—which blame Seoul for increasing military tension—as ‘unacceptable.’
Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, described the border situation as ‘serious’ and indicated that Pyongyang is considering deploying more troops and tactical weapons along the border. North Korea also cited nearly 1,000 loudspeaker broadcasts and 91 warning shots fired by South Korean forces between October 1 and October 17 as provocations.
In response, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense warned of ‘resolute punishment’ if North Korea proceeds with its plans to increase its military presence. South Korean military officials, including Jin Young-sun and Jin Yang-seung, emphasized that South Korean actions, such as warning shots, are legitimate defensive measures intended to prevent incursions. The South Korean military has been ordered to respond with determination to any further provocations.
