South Korean agricultural sector faces economic challenges
South Korean producers are facing significant economic distress due to falling prices and inefficient infrastructure. In the salt industry, domestic solar salt prices have plummeted, dropping approximately 68.4% since 2023. As of July, the local transaction price fell to 5,200 KRW per 20kg, a level that fails to cover production costs. This decline is partially attributed to the suspected illegal distribution of low-cost imported salt, which is often mislabeled as domestic product to gain unfair advantages.
Simultaneously, agricultural infrastructure in Bonghwa County is under scrutiny. Despite an investment of approximately 14.5 billion KRW, the local Agricultural Product Processing Center (APC) is operating at a critically low capacity of 13% to 20%. The facility's annual revenue has failed to cover even the depreciation costs of its high-tech equipment, leading to concerns regarding the efficient use of taxpayer funds and the need for structural reform in local agricultural distribution.
