South Korean airport operators launch tourism promos and propose fee hikes

South Korean airport operators are pursuing different strategies to manage growth and financial stability. Incheon International Airport Corporation has launched a tourism promotion running from October 1 to December 31 to attract transit passengers. The initiative offers $100 discounts on local Incheon tour programs, free lounge access, and partnerships with platforms like Trip.com to provide discounted transit tickets.

Simultaneously, Korea Airports Corporation (KAC), which operates 14 airports including Gimpo, Gimhae, and Jeju, has proposed increasing passenger fees to address long-term financial deficits. KAC suggests raising international passenger fees by over 10,000 won and domestic fees by at least 1,000 won. The corporation cited a 23-year freeze on fees despite a 66% rise in inflation, leading to a cost recovery rate of only 60% and a cumulative deficit of approximately 900 billion won since the COVID-19 pandemic. These funds are deemed necessary for upgrading aging facilities and financing new airport construction projects.
