South Korean and Mexican tax authorities hold first meeting to support Korean firms

Lim Kwang-hyun, Commissioner of the National Tax Service of Korea, met with Antonio Martínez Dagnino, head of the Mexican tax authority, in Mexico City for the first inaugural meeting between the two agencies. During the meeting, Commissioner Lim requested active tax support for South Korean companies operating in Mexico, specifically addressing issues such as delays in VAT refunds and challenges regarding double taxation.

In response, Commissioner Dagnino pledged to communicate actively with Korean firms to resolve tax difficulties and provide guidance on corporate tax filings to ensure compliance. The two agencies also agreed to strengthen cooperation by sharing experiences in digital tax administration, including the use of AI and big data for tax management. The Mexican authority expressed significant interest in South Korea’s digital transformation and AI-driven tax evasion detection systems.

Prior to the official meeting, Commissioner Lim held a briefing for South Korean companies and overseas residents to listen to local tax concerns. This diplomatic effort comes as trade between the two nations continues to grow, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $20.5 billion last year. Currently, 562 South Korean companies are active in Mexico across sectors such as automotive, electronics, and steel.
