South Korean Apartment Rep Convicted of Assault After Fatal Fight
On February 28, 2024, a dispute between two apartment resident association leaders in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, escalated into a physical fight after the parties signed a written "fight waiver." The 40‑year‑old representative repeatedly punched and kicked the 50‑year‑old opponent, who later collapsed and died of an acute heart condition.
The Suwon High Court upheld the lower court’s decision, finding the defendant guilty only of assault and sentencing him to ten months’ imprisonment suspended for two years, together with 80 hours of community service. The court said the defendant could not have reasonably foreseen the victim’s death, stating, "the defendant could not have easily expected the assault to result in death."
