South Korean biotech firms approach first global blockbuster drugs

South Korean pharmaceutical companies are approaching the milestone of producing their first global blockbuster drugs, defined as products generating over $1 billion in annual revenue. According to data from the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, Celltrion’s autoimmune disease treatment, Zymfentra, and SK Biopharmaceuticals’ epilepsy drug, Xcopri, are projected to exceed the $1 billion threshold by 2027.

Zymfentra’s revenue is estimated to grow from 839.4 billion KRW last year to 1.35 trillion KRW this year, potentially reaching 2.18 trillion KRW by 2027. Similarly, Xcopri is expected to rise from 683 billion KRW last year to 1.45 trillion KRW by 2027. Other candidates for future blockbuster status include HK inno.N’s gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment, K-CAB, and Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s botulinum toxin, Nabota.

Representative Nam In-soon noted that these developments signal South Korea’s transition from a technology follower to a global leader in the biotech sector. To ensure continued commercial success in international markets like the US and Europe, experts suggest strengthening R&D investment, regulatory response capabilities, and fostering AI-integrated talent.
