South Korean Blue House considers rejecting Supreme Court nominees
A political confrontation is escalating in South Korea between the Blue House and the judiciary over the appointment of Supreme Court justices. The conflict stems from Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae’s decision to submit written nominations for two justices, Son Bong-gi and Kim Seong-su, without prior coordination with the presidency.
The Blue House is reportedly considering rejecting the nomination of Son Bong-gi, a judge from the Daegu District Court, due to the lack of prior consultation. In response to a potential rejection, the Supreme Court is reviewing the possibility of restarting the candidate recommendation process.
Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok has intensified pressure by ordering the installation of banners nationwide calling for Cho Hee-dae’s resignation, labeling him a “destroyer of the rule of law.” Some hardliners within the party have even suggested the possibility of impeachment. Meanwhile, the People Power Party has criticized the Democratic Party’s actions, characterizing the situation as a “judicial coup” and accusing the opposition of attempting to manipulate judicial appointments.
