South Korean bond yields fall as gold prices rise amid fiscal concerns
South Korean government bond yields declined ahead of the Bank of Korea's monetary policy meeting. The 3-year treasury yield fell to 3.790%, influenced by falling international oil prices and net buying of treasury futures by foreign investors. The decline in West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil, driven by reduced perceptions of military conflict between the US and Iran, contributed to the strength in the domestic bond market.
Simultaneously, a divergence has emerged in global markets where rising US Treasury long-term yields have coincided with a surge in gold prices. While high interest rates typically drive gold prices down, current market trends suggest that rising yields are being driven by concerns over US fiscal deficits and term premiums. This has led investors to seek gold as a reliable store of value. Consequently, gold spot prices reached a three-month high, and there has been significant capital inflow into gold-related ETFs, particularly among individual investors seeking alternatives to volatile equity markets.
