South Korean border regions secure record national development budgets
South Korean border regions in Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon State have secured record-breaking national budget allocations for 2027 to promote regional development and infrastructure improvement.
Gyeonggi Province has secured 95.8 billion KRW, an increase of 31.6 billion KRW from the previous year. The funds are designated for special situation area development (77.8 billion KRW) to improve living conditions and border area development support (18.1 billion KRW) to foster regional growth and peace tourism. Key projects include the Gapyeong-gun bus depot and the Yeoncheon Jeongok-ri site complex development.
Gangwon State has secured 147.8 billion KRW, representing 60% of its total 248.4 billion KRW budget for border area projects. This is a 47% increase compared to the previous year. The allocation includes 71.1 billion KRW for border area development support, such as theme-based hubs in Chuncheon, Yanggu, and Inje, and 76.7 billion KRW for special situation area development, including the Cheorwon World Geopark.
