South Korean children's activity spaces exceed environmental safety standards
An analysis of environmental safety diagnoses conducted on children's activity spaces reveals that 43.2% of inspected facilities exceeded safety standards. According to data provided to National Assembly member Eo Gi-gu by the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, 1,084 out of 2,509 facilities inspected last year failed to meet specific safety criteria.
Regional children's centers showed the highest rate of non-compliance at 71%. Other facilities with high exceedance rates included kindergartens (68%), elementary schools (66%), and daycare centers (62%). The most frequent violations involved phthalates, which are chemical substances used to soften plastics and are suspected endocrine disruptors, followed by heavy metals and air quality issues.
The number of facilities exceeding safety standards has shown a steady increase over the last five years, rising from 79 in 2021 to 1,084 in the most recent reporting period. Representative Eo Gi-gu has called for a thorough analysis of the causes behind these violations and demanded follow-up inspections to ensure that facilities have implemented necessary improvements.
