South Korean cities implement AI and robotics for public services
South Korean municipalities are advancing technological integration to improve public services and healthcare. Dangjin City has announced its ‘AX Leading City’ vision, aiming to transform the city through Artificial Intelligence Transformation (AX). The initiative focuses on three pillars: safety, industry, and administration. Key projects include establishing an AI integrated control center for disaster prevention, building an intelligent transportation system, and creating an AI data center mega-special zone. The city also plans to support AI startups and implement ‘AI administrative officers’ to automate repetitive tasks.
In Gwangju, the Seo-gu district is conducting a pilot program for care robots to assist individuals with severe disabilities or illnesses, such as dementia and stroke. In collaboration with the National Rehabilitation Center, the district is testing robots designed for excretion assistance, indoor mobility, pressure sore prevention, and muscle strengthening. The goal is to evaluate the practical effectiveness of these robots in helping patients remain in their homes rather than moving to long-term care facilities.
